On my way to Round Top, I take a detour through Brenham, hoping to score some brisket at LJ’s BBQ. I get there too late. While wandering down a side street to find a sad lunch alternative, gunfire erupts. I flinch at the first pops before spotting a woman in antebellum attire waving me off with her lacy parasol. I learn later I had walked into the middle of the Brenham Bandits’ dress rehearsal for Local History Day.

At first working from home sounded ideal — putting your Zoom meeting on mute so you could do laundry and make yourself a homemade lunch? Sign me up. But… it got old quick, and we’re in need of a change of scenery to jump start our creative side.
Round Top is the perfect place to go for a “Workation.”
Workation (n): a vacation that one spends getting work done.
Here’s your itinerary for a 3-day Workation at the Flophouze Shipping Contrainer Hotel in Round Top, Texas.
Make a reservation at Flophouze
Make a reservation during the week, Monday-Thursday on the Flophouze website here: https://flophouze.com/booking.
Pack for your trip
Before you head out, pack for your relaxing Workation. You’ll need the following:
Work materials (laptop, notebook, etc)
Clothes for 3 days + swimsuit
Easy breakfast and snack items
Drinks for the week (wine, beer, margarita supplies)
A book, journal or your favorite vinyl (there are record players in each hotel)
Day 1: Check in, explore Flophouze hotel, dinner at Las Fuentes and bonfire
You’ve packed and you’re ready for your Workation! Check-in is at 3pm, so plan to arrive at Flophouze anytime after that. Our team will email you check-in information a few days before your stay with a combination to access your shipping containers lock box. When you arrive, park next to your shipping container. Using the code, open the lock box located on the front of the container to get your key. Settle into your room and walk around the grounds, taking pictures of the huge antique airplane and making friends with the cows on the ranch next door.
When you get hungry, head to Las Fuentes in La Grange for dinner. I recommend ordering the red salsa enchiladas and of course, a margarita. After dinner, head back to your shipping container hotel to enjoy a bonfire, listen to a record and get a good night’s sleep.
Day 2: Breakfast in Round Top, Festival Hill, steak dinner, sunset and stargazing
After a refreshing night’s sleep, you’re ready for your first full day of Workation. Grab coffee and breakfast tacos at the Round Top Coffee Shop. This cozy, eclectic coffee house has the friendliest staff and will guarantee that you start your morning off right. Walk around town for a few minutes with your coffee to clear your mind, then head back to your hotel to work (using our free wifi). Be sure to take a break and go for a swim in the Insta-worthy shipping container pool.
After you finish working, head to Festival Hill to tour the grounds. Festival Hill has over 200 acres of historic buildings, lakes, and beautiful greenery. It’s perfect for a relaxing, scenic drive. From there, grab dinner at JW’s Steakhouse. I definitely recommend treating yourself to a juicy, mouth-watering filet here.
Head back to your hotel after dinner to pour yourself a glass of wine and watch the sunset from your porch or take a dip. Once it gets dark, make sure you take a few minutes to stargaze. You can see the Milky Way from here on clear nights!
Day 3: Morning swim, lunch at Popi Burger, Lake Fayette and dinner at Royer’s
Day three of your Workation begins with a morning swim at the hotel and making yourself a simple breakfast at home. Work from your porch and enjoy the fresh air for a few hours, then head to Popi Burger for lunch. Their burgers are huge, so you’ll want to take a walk to digest a bit. Head to Lake Fayette for a stroll.
When you get hungry again, head back into town for dinner at the famous Royers Round Top Cafe. Royers has been a neighborhood favorite for over 30 years and their pies do not disappoint. Order a slice of their original buttermilk pie — my mouth is watering just thinking about it.
After dinner, head back to Flophouze to relish in your last night of peace and quiet under the stars.
Day 4: Check out
After treating yourself to a few days of Workation, tidy up the hotel, place the key back in the lock box and head back home feeling rejuvenated and inspired!
